About us
With Rockstar Sushi , Frank Mechaly has taken high-end fashion jeans to a whole new level that is considered to be unmatched by any other brand currently in the market. Rockstar Sushi is a reflection of classic and modern influences, nearly twenty years in the making, that Mechaly has crafted into his own signature look. Made from the superior quality fabrics imported from Europe and Japan, and painstakingly manufactured exclusively in the U.S., in the heart of downtown L.A., one can clearly see that Mechaly is in touch with the pulse of the city and has successfully fused old and new to create an edgy new breed of fashion jeans for both sexes.

1.) How did you start your company? And why did you decide to keep it in L.A. and not outsource anything out of the area/country?
My company came together after a lifetime of lessons learned in the industry and due to the passion of a group of individuals determined to keep pushing forward despite any hardship faced. We have had some immense successes in past and we know what works and what doesn't. This has become our time to truly shine.
As to why we don't outsource, it is because Los Angeles is the heart of our business--the rock-n-roll capital of the U.S--which is very much our inspiration. It was important to us to be in touch with the city and its pulse. We also did not choose to outsource because it is our mission to absolutely maintain the integrity of the brand.

As the President of the company, I consider myself a sort of "guardian of the temple" in that I am standing watch to insure that our deliveries are made on time, that we don't cut any corners on the high quality workmanship and the formulas we use for washing. These important elements tend to get out of control when outsourcing.
2.) Is this a matter of principle to you? Would it be cheaper for you to outsource?
Absolutely it is a matter of principle to me. It would be much cheaper to outsource. But it is not cheaper in the long run if your business goes downhill because you aren't shipping on time, or your product is inferior.
3.) As an American based company, do you believe it is important to manufacture products in the U.S.? Why or why not?
We do proudly import the finest fabrics from Europe and Japan, but how could we call ourselves "RockStar Original" if we sent everything off to China? We don't have anything against China, but I do believe in supporting the same economy that supports us.
4.) Do you think people are drawn to your company because it is "Made in America"? Is that a selling point in this day and age?
I think that in this day and age it is more important than ever to reawaken that sense of pride in any "Made in America" label. This brand has a very American style and we want to embrace that theme fully.
5.) How has the rocky economy affected your business?
The economy has made me truly consider what is important in clothing right now. Is purchasing cheaply made clothing really a better deal? One thing I have done that is different than the rest is that I am not lowering our price point drastically. That is because I am committed to maintaining the quality. These jeans cost me a significant amount of money to make per pair. But when you see the quality and workmanship that goes into them - and then the fact that they are a true fashion jean - you realize that your money is going a long way. And these jeans definitely go a long way, whether it's down a red carpet or out on the city streets.
6.) Do you have any advice for those interested in starting their own business based in L.A.?
Don't make your family into partners and don't name your jeans after a number! Just kidding. There is a long story behind all that. I would just say, follow your heart, not just the dollar sign, and make something you are passionate about. Otherwise the difficulties will eventually overcome you at some point.
